Wednesday Update

Today was a normal Wednesday.  We started with our calendar warm-up and then went to centers.  We continued work in our Chester books (from The Kissing Hand), did our writing assessment, worked in our math journals, and spent time in the Starfall app on the iPads.  After recess, we talked about how pictures help us understand the books we are reading.  After lunch we did Interactive writing and created a Circle Map that includes information about sucks.  During Interactive Writing, children share the pen and we work on sounding out words and listening for letter sounds.  I've included a picture of the Circle Map at the bottom of this post.

We went to the library and the kids got to check out books.  I did not get all the books handed out at the end of the day.  If your child did not being a book home today, they will bring it home on Friday.  Books are due on Wednesdays.

After time in the library, we came back to the room and practiced counting from 6-10 before going to the gym for P.E.  When we returned to the classroom we worked on a journal page for the first time.  It was difficult for some students who are learning what writing is and that "kindergarten writing" is ok.  We will do more writing next week.

We had a busy, but fun day!

What a Day!

Reminder:  Parent Orientation is tonight at 6:00 in Mrs. Pickett's classroom or at 11:45 on Friday right after children are picked up.  The information at this orientation is specific to our classroom and is not necessarily the information you received on the assessment day.  I think you will find the information valuable.  I look forward to seeing you!

We had a very busy day in kindergarten!  This morning we worked in our calendar warm-up books and then went to centers.  We worked on color words, writing our names correctly, math journals, and Starfall on the iPads.  After lunch we had the opportunity to visit the library.  They listened to Clark the Shark and decorated name plates.  We will be able to check out 1 book next week.  After that, in order to check out a new book, the first books needs to be returned.  We spent some time with numbers and counting and then went to the music room to see Mr. Sutton.  After that, we were able to spend some time in the art room!

Wow!  What a busy day!

Into the Regular Schedule

We had another terrific day in kindergarten.  The children did a fantastic job of being patient while pictures were taken.

On Monday we will start our regular schedule.  School will start at 9:00 and end at 3:40 on Monday and Wednesday, and we will dismiss at 11:40 on Friday.  The children will eat lunch in the cafeteria.

We will also learn how to do centers.  This instructional block is very important because during this time children will receive small group reading instruction that meets their needs.  If you are considering volunteering in the classroom, this is an important time and your help will be appreciated!

We will also start our Specials rotation on Monday.  When we are here for the entire day, we have an opportunity to go to Music, Art, P.E., and the computer lab.  I will try to send a schedule home with the  dates so students can dress appropriately.

I'm excited about our first days together and I'm looking forward to next week!

First Day of Kindergarten!

We had a wonderful first day of kindergarten!  We learned how to work in our morning warm-up notbooks, explored the math tubs, had lots of fun on the playground, and talked about school rules.  Some students ate snack.  Some students felt a little left out because they did not have a snack.  I told students to talk to their mom and dad about bringing a snack to school, if they want one.  Would anyone be willing to send a snack that can be kept in the office for students that forget to bring one?  I'm thinking a large box of goldfish crackers, maybe?

Tomorrow is picture day!  We will go down to gym for pictures at 9:10, so please be on time to school.

Next week we will start our all day Monday, all day Wednesday, and Friday morning schedule.  If your student will be purchasing lunch here at school, please send in a check to cover the cost.  You can also go online to Infinite Campus and make a credit card payment there.  Otherwise, please send your child to school with a lunch.

I look forward to another terrific day tomorrow!

Picture Day

Individual picture day is on Friday, August 19.  We will go to have our pictures right away in the morning.  Please try to be on time for school.  Watch for order forms!

Welcome!

Welcome to Kindergarten!  I am so excited to have your children in my class.  We are going to have a wonderful year!

Let me tell you a little about myself.  I have been teaching for 17 years.  I have been teaching kindergarten for most of my career.  Kindergarten is my favorite!  Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and 2 boys (8 and 10 years old).  I also enjoy working with my family's horses.

Kindergarten is a busy place, so please visit this blog regularly for the latest news and up to date information.  Many parents have installed the Blogger app on their phones and Ipads.  This makes checking the blog frequently quick and easy.  You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  The best way to get a hold of me is via email.  My email address is pickett_jenny@svvsd.org.

I will be holding 2 parent orientation meetings.  These meetings are important because I will provide important information about our classroom and the learning kids will be doing throughout the year. This is not the same information, you will receive while the children were being assessed before school started.  Please plan to attend one of the parent orientations.  Information at these orientations will be extremely helpful as the year progresses. Keep an eye out for an invitation to the orientation meetings.

Thank you and keep an eye out for more information on this blog!
