Classroom News-March 20

We started off the short week with a busy Monday.  We worked in our calendar notebook and wrote about something we did yesterday.  Some of the kids did a great job drawing and writing about what they did.  Some kids are still working on sounding out the words they want to write.  We will have many more opportunities to work on this in class.  We worked at centers and counted tally marks (counting by 5s), built sentences, and played Go Fish with cards that had spring words on them.  After recess, we practiced writing sight words on the whiteboards.  After recess, we went through our phonics cards.  I'm really impressed with how well the children are doing with the letter blends!  We read a book about how things change in the spring season and a story about a cute baby bear that can't wait for spring!  We wrote about how we see spring outside.  We worked on addition problems in math.  After P.E., we looked at books about different cultures.  The children had lots of questions about the pictures they saw.

On Wednesday, we will go to Art for our specials class.

Remember that Wednesday is our Multicultural feast.  Every child is encouraged to bring a dish that reflects their heritage.  Please bring enough for at least 23 students to sample.  Parents are welcome to join us.

We will not have school from Friday, March 24 through Sunday, April 2.  We will return to school on Monday, April 3.  Enjoy Spring Break!

On Wednesday, April 5, we will put eggs in our classroom incubator.  They will be in there for 21 days.  This is an exciting time!

Expert Presentations will start on April 12.  I am really eager to see this year's presentations!  I will not send much in the way of homework home during this time because I want children to spend their energy working on these presentations.  Keep reading, keep playing the games, keep working on Lexia/Core 5 and MyOn, but there will not be much in the way of additional homework.

We will have a field trip onWednesday, April 26.  We will be going to Anderson Farm and the cost of the trip is $7.  I will send a permission slip and request for funds home after Spring Break.

Check the blog frequently.  There is a lot going on.

Look what's coming up!

I had a chance to sit down and look at a calendar over the weekend and noticed that we have come to the BUSY part of the year.

Parent talk:  I am interested in having a 5 half day program for kindergarten next year.  If you know parents who have enrolled or are going to enroll and are interested in a 5 half day program, please contact me or Mr. Corey and let us know.

Report cards are now available to see on Infinite Campus.  I will send report card indicators home in Friday Folders this week.

Here are some of the upcoming events:

-Expert Presentations-Letters were sent home on Friday about Expert Presentations.  These will start on April 12.  Three students will present every full day.  We will do presentations almost until the end of the school year.  Your child's date is on the back of the Expert Presentation letter.

-Multicultural potluck-We will have a multicultural potluck from 9:00-10:00 on Wednesday, March 22.  Each student is asked to bring a food that reflects their heritage.  Please bring enough for 23 students to sample.  To make sure we do not have duplicate foods, please sign up at www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c45aba72ea3fb6-multicultural.

-Spring Break-Spring Break will start on Friday, March 24 and go through April 2.  We will return to school on Monday, April 3.

-Late Start Days:  Wednesday April 5 and Wednesday May 3 are Late Start days.  School will start at 11:30 and dismiss at 3:40.

-We are working on a field trip towards the end of April to Anderson Farm.  The cost of this trip is $7.  We will send permission slips home after Spring Break.

-Around the middle of April, I will ask students to bring in $5 for a Field Day t-shirt.  This is a fun tradition in my classroom.  I order shirts for the children and we decorate them for Field Day.  This is one of the more memorable events of the year.

-Right after Spring Break, we will start our Chick unit.  As part of that unit, we will hatch chicks.  This is an exciting experience!

Be sure to keep an eye on the blog.  I will keep it up to date with all the current event information!

Classroom News-March 10

We had a busy week!  We have been celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading some of his books.  We have really enjoyed them!  On Wednesday, we read Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  After reading it, we talked about cause and effect.  The class did a great job of thinking about this as we created a Multi Flow Thinking Map.  I've included a picture of it on this post.

After our time in P.E. on Wednesday, our 4th Grade Buddies from Mrs. Melaney's class came in and we played with Oobleck.  It is made with equal parts of cornstarch and water (with a little food coloring for fun).  It was so much fun!

In the Friday folders today, I sent home a letter explaining the Expert Presentations.  Expert Presentations will start on April 12.  We will have 3 students present each day at 1:30.  Each presentation should be 3-10 minutes long.  Your child's presentation date is on the back side of the letter explaining the Expert Presentations.  Parents are welcome to come in and watch during the presentation, but need to quietly watch from the back of the room.  I am eager to see these presentations!

Between now and Spring Break, we will be talking about cultures in different countries around the world.  To culminate this unit, we will have a feast to sample foods from various countries on Wednesday, March 22 at 9:00.  I am inviting families to bring in a food that reflects their family's nationality for students to sample.  We have 23 students in class.  If you are from Italian heritage, you would consider an Italian food to bring in.  If you are from German heritage, you would consider a German food to share.  I have set up a Sign Up Genius page for the feast.  Please sign up there to tell me what you are planning to bring.  This is important so that we don't have 3 students show up with the same food.  Visit the Sign Up page at

Have a great weekend!

Dr. Seuss's Birthday!

This week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading several of his books.  We have enjoyed the silliness and rhyming in the books.

On Friday, the children can help celebrate by dressing in silly clothes.  They may choose to wear pajamas, socks that don't match, clothes on backwards, silly hair, a silly hat...the possibilities are endless!

Next week, we will get together with our 4th grade buddies and play with Oobleck.  It's a little messy, but a whole lot of fun!
