Busy Monday

It is nice to be back to a normal schedule after last week!

We had a busy morning of centers.  We have started small reading groups.  Every day we review the ZooPhonics cards and talk about the name of each letter and the sound they represent. If you would like ZooPhonics flash cards that you can use at home to support the learning we do at school, let me know.  I'm happy to send one home.

We are also working on handwriting and making letters correctly.  If you did not get the page that explains how we are learning to make letters correctly, let me know and I'll send one home.

We are continuing to work in our math journals.  We represent math story problems with pictures and numbers.

We also listened to If You Give a Pig a Pancake at the listening center.  We drew pictures of our favorite part of the story.

Halfway through centers, we did a Shelter in Place/Tornado drill.  I explained to the children that this was just practice.  They are always safe in our shelter location.  The children did a wonderful job of staying quiet and sitting still during the drill.  When it was all over, a few students told me the drill was scary and one even wondered if his family was safe.  I told them that since it was just a drill, we were just practicing.  No one was in danger so everyone was safe.

After lunch we drew a picture of 1.  You could draw anything in the picture, but only one of them.  This replicates what we saw when we read Anno's Counting Book.

This afternoon we went to Art and wrote in our journals.  We have been talking about a story called Make Way for Ducklings.  Today we talked about what authors and illustrators do, and compared/contrasted the main characters in the story.  I've included pictures of our work around that story.

On Wednesday we will go to P.E.

On Friday of this week, the Denver Zoo will visit our classroom to do a presentation about animal homes.  That will be fun and exciting!
